Simplify Your Driving Experience: Convert Your Foreign Licence to a UAE Licence

If you’re a new Dubai resident with a driving licence from your home country, the idea of applying for a new driving permit can seem daunting. The process of fulfilling requirements, taking theoretical and practical tests, and waiting for approvals is stressful and time-consuming. Thankfully, you might be eligible for a direct licence exchange, bypassing much of the hassle.

Here’s a complete guide to help you determine your eligibility and navigate the process:

Requirements for Converting Your Driving Permit

To convert your foreign driving permit to a UAE licence, you’ll need the following:

  • Emirates ID
  • Original driving licence
  • Legal Arabic translation of your driving licence
  • No objection certificate (NOC) from your sponsor
  • Two passport-sized photos
  • Completed application form
  • Valid eye test result from an RTA-accredited centre

How to Apply

Online Application:

  1. Visit the RTA website and log in using your Emirates ID, passport details, or traffic file number. You can also use UAE Pass for login.
  2. Click ‘Apply for a New Driving Licence or a New Category Based on Exchanging Licence’ on the homepage.
  3. Update your phone number and verify it with the OTP sent to you.
  4. Specify your licence-issuing country and enter your existing licence details.
  5. Select the licence category and attach a copy of your driving licence.
  6. Submit the application and pay the required fees using your debit or credit card.
  7. Receive a reference number to monitor your application’s status.

 

In-Person Application:

  1. Visit any RTA customer happiness centre. They are open Monday to Thursday from 8am to 7:30pm, and Friday from 8am to 12pm.
  2. Submit the required documents and request to add the necessary category to your driving licence.
  3. Settle the required fees.

 

For Singaporean Residents:

  1. Submit required documents at an accredited driving institute.
  2. Open a traffic file (if applying for the first time).
  3. Book and pass the knowledge test at the institute.
  4. Settle the required fees and receive your licence upon passing.

Service Fees

General Fees:

  • Dh200 to open your file with RTA
  • Dh600 for the issuance of the new Dubai licence
  • Dh50 for traffic manual
  • Dh20+ for ‘Knowledge and Innovation’ fees

For Singaporean Residents:

  • Dh200 to open your training file with RTA
  • Dh100 for a learning application
  • Dh50 for the traffic handbook
  • Dh400 for the knowledge test
  • Dh300 for the issuance of the driving licence
  • Dh20+ for ‘Knowledge and Innovation’ fees

Claiming Your Licence

Present your original driving licence and Emirates ID at any RTA customer happiness centre. After verifying your identity, your new licence will be printed and handed to you. If you have an Apple device, you can receive your electronic licence via the Apple Wallet through the RTA Dubai App.

Validity

  • For those aged 21 and above: The new licence will be valid for two years.
  • For those under 21: The licence will be valid for one year.

You may be eligible for a direct licence exchange if your driving licence was issued in one of the following countries:
